Barnegat Cup

The Barnegat Cup was donated by John W. 'Jack' Orelup in 1952 as the perpetual trophy for the winner of the Lightning class race on the Bay Head race day of the BBYRA. The Barnegat Cup replaced the earlier California Cup, which was retired.

The cup is named after the original Lightning fleet on Barnegat Bay. Jack Orelup (1897-1966) was Fleet Captain of BHYC from 1961-1965 and a trustee from 1960-1963. He was a founding member of Lightning Fleet #3 and sailed his Lightning Javelin to BBYRA Championships in 1952 and 1958, as well as a second place finish in the 1943 Lightning Nationals. Jack was a two-time recipient of the BBYRA O.G. Dale Memorial Trophy for outstanding sportsmanship, in 1945 and 1965.
