Bay Head Yacht Club - Women's Sandpiper Regatta
William Gordon Ver Planck Trophy
This trophy was donated by BHYC Commodore Zoé Wells to be awarded annually to the winner of a women's regatta in Sandpipers. It is a one-day event consisting of three races open to all BBYRA member clubs. The skipper and crew must be women. The trophy, a silver platter, originated in 1949 as a women's Lightning class award named for Bay Head Yacht Club member William Gordon Ver Planck (1861-1931), a trustee from 1912-1919 and 1924-1925. The trophy was won by the Wells sisters three straight years and retired. With the advent of the Sandpiper class, Commodore Wells placed the trophy back into competition in 1994.
